Ingredients

1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon baking powder
3/4 cup sugar
3 1/2 cups flour
1 1/4 cups buttermilk
1/4 cup melted butter
2 eggs, slightly beaten
2 tablespoons caraway seeds
1 tablespoon black caraway seeds
1 cup raisins
1/2 cup dried cranberries

Preparation method

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
2. Add first 5 ingredients to food processor and pulse 3 times to sift.
3. Add next three ingredients and mix till it comes to a ball. Mix in seeds, raisins, and cranberries. Knead into a ball and place into a well greased pan. I like cast iron skillet 8-9 inches. Mark a cross on top and brush with more melted butter.
4. Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown, 50 to 60 minutes.

  • Tweak: DukeTruman Used different ingredients:

    Didn't have any black caraway seeds, so I just used caraway--gotta be careful - I almost threw in the cumin seeds (they all look alike to me)! Good thing I tasted them first.

    Co-worker brought this in for breakfast. Tasty stuff. I liked the texture and flavor. The caraway is interesting, in a good way.
