The pork tenderloin sandwich is a Midwestern classic, found primarily in Iowa and Indiana.
No one knows for sure who made the first one, but the thin, flattened meat of a pork tenderloin sandwich it sure looks a lot like the German/Austrian dish Wiener Schnitzel. Traditionally made of veal, European immigrants may have altered the recipe to make it with pork, which is far more common in the Midwest.
Since 1994, the Iowa Pork Producers Association has held an annual contest to select the best pork tenderloin sandwich in the state. We created a map so you can see where all the winners are--and help you have the road trip of a lifetime.
In an August 2010 episode of Man v. Food, host Adam Richman stopped by Indianapolis’ Edward Drive-In, where the owners offered him a 9-pound pork tenderloin sandwich. (No, he didn’t finish it.)
Two Indiana college students met the people and learned the history behind the pork tenderloin in a 1999 documentary: In Search of the Famous Hoosier Breaded Pork Tenderloin Sandwich.
